Feb 3- Golf & Ski Demo and Community Night

Enjoy free demos of new ski equipment from 4 to 8PM. Feb 4- Ridge Runners, Snowmobile Hill Climb Another night of adrenaline pumping snowmobile action under the lights on a new race trail this Saturday. Racing starts at 5PM. There is an $8 gate fee, kids under 10 are free, and it's only $20 to enter your sled to race. Enjoy food and beverages in the Whaleback base lodge and watch the action from the deck. Season pass holders and day ticket purchasers are free to stay and watch the event at no charge.

Feb 5- Super Bowl PreGame

Get ready for the Super Bowl with some runs at Whaleback. Wear any Patriots or Giants article of clothing and enjoy $15 lift tickets ALL DAY. There will be specials in the pub after skiing before the game starts.

Our snowmaking arsenal is firing on all cylinders around the clock as temperatures allow, creating an impressive manmade blizzard and covering up to 10 trails at a time - it's a beautiful sight! In addition to 48 trails on 3 peaks, today skiers & riders are carving 3 parks - 2 secret parks and the new Springboard Park - check them out! Our park crews are hard at work building the superpipe and expect it to open Monday - stay tuned to our website for updates! Skkiing at Crotched New Year's Day Recap

Since the weather was crappy on Saturday so we delayed the December NETSkki LSM until Sunday. Only two of us, Duane and me would have been going anyway. Duane, however was not able to go on Sunday, but I had a great afternoon of Skkiing at Crotched. The temps were in the balmy 40's and Crotched Mountain, despite the mild winter so far, has done a stellar job at snow making. I racked up 23.63 miles which includes lift ride up, so actual Skki miles was probably about 16. I clocked a top speed of 45.7mph on my Garmin Nuvi and my Endomondo tracking stats can be found here: http://bit.ly/v9Kxsa.

The next NETSkki LSM will be at either Ragged or Whaleback Mountains on January 28.

Greetings from Loon Mountain! It's snowing as I write this - what a lovely sight! We've received 13.5 inches of natural snow in the past week and opened more terrain, including the new South Peak trails Upper Twitcher and Jobber! Yesterday's rain did not decrease our open terrain, and tomorrow skiers and riders will be carving 33 trails and 4 parks - including the new park on Dropline - the most open terrain in NH! Temperatures are falling quickly this afternoon and with NH's most powerful snowmaking system cranking full blast, we're creating our own manmade blizzard to resurface all of our open terrain - and open more terrain, too. Seasonal temperatures are solidly entrenched over the next week and the extended forecast is looking great for skiing & riding - and for blasting snow to pile up deep carpets of corduroy for you to carve. The forecast also calls for snow showers and flurries right through Sunday - a really nice way to ring in the new year. Dear Whale Rider;

As a skier/rider, watching the weather report these last few weeks has been about as exciting as watching the snow melt in March. While there have been a few cold nights, most of them have had marginal temperatures for making snow, and daytime temperatures consistently rise above freezing. So, we have made the call to push our Opening Day off until Dec 26th, 2011.

Our Season Pass Office is open daily Monday - Saturday from 10 AM - 4 PM to take photos and print your season pass so as soon as we open you can head straight to the chairlift. We will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and then open for the season on Monday, the 26th, also the start of our December Vacation Camp for kids.

There has been a ton of working going on this fall as we prepare for the season. We have a new glade area recently named "Three Sisters" and are moving our terrain park trail over to what used to be Splash which will allow for top-to-bottom beginner skiing and riding on the east side of Whaleback. A couple of really nice improvements! Also, we are almost done with a long-overdue website redesign and we hope to have it live by the end of this week!

We have many great events and programs going on this year, and we are eager to see you soon at the Whale!

Crotched Mountain Snow Report....

Our state of the art snowmaking system has been running non-stop since yesterday afternoon! Just to give you an idea on what our snow makers have done so far...
• We have been able to pump 4,000 gallons of water per minute up onto the hill through 51 fan guns (these amounts are expected to rise as the day goes on).

• Snowmaking will continue throughout the day and well into the night without any interruptions.

• As of 8am snow piles at the summit are roughly 4-5 feet deep!

• At this time we are making snow on: Meteor, Galaxy, Satellite Summit, Moon Walk and Cosmic Blast.

It's absolutely incredible what our snow makers can accomplish in just 12 hours of snowmaking! Temperatures are suppose to remain favorable for snowmaking throughout the day and night! Our anticipated Opening Day has been re-scheduled to Wednesday, December 14. We appreciated your patience. Winter has finally settled into the mountains and our snowmakers are busy working to lay down some super snow that will make you forget the fact that we opened a little later than we all would have liked. We plan to open with terrain for intermediate and advanced abilities, and at least one route off the Summit Six Pack. We will open more terrain as soon as possible. Daily Kids Camps (Ages 3-12)

Whether it’s your child’s first day or 50th day on snow, our Kids Camps coaches bring a fun, exciting element to learning how to ski and snowboard. Ragged Mountain Ski Team - Developmental Program

This program is designed for prospective racers for the RMST, high school league racers wanting extra weekend training or those wanting to try out racing for the first time, before making the time and financial commitment to full race training. The primary focus is the FUNdamentals of skiing with an exposure to alpine racing.

SPORT THOMA SKI SHOP

We are looking forward to the opening of our new Sport Thoma Ski Shop. Sport Thoma offers the best brands in equipment and outerwear, plus the shop is stocked with all the “extras” you need for your perfect day on the slopes.

Ragged Mountain Resort will be using a new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) ticketing system which means less time in line and more time on the snow! The new Get Ragged Card will be used as your lift ticket, season pass or Frequent Skier Card. Each card has a unique ID and radio frequency transponder. After an initial $5 purchase of your Get Ragged Card, you can load your card at home, on your smart phone, or at the ticket window. You’ll save up to15% purchasing tickets online when you have a Get Ragged Card. You can track your vertical feet, days skied, and go directly to the lifts.

Oh the weather outside is going to get frightful! So the sensible thing is to change the time of the start of the ride earlier so plan to arrive at the Carleton School at 11:00 am. That should give us clearance of the looming nor'easter.

Hopefully your costumes are warm as the temps will be low to mid 40s and the winds about 13 knots. The rain shouldn't start until after 2pm and we will plan to be done by them.

The event we have all been waiting for, the Halloween Trikke ride the rest of Trikke nation can only read about: The year end ride in Salem, Massachusetts, the Halloween capital of the world. We'll start the tour by warming up on the Salem bike path that runs along Memorial Drive, then a circuit along Collins Cove to Salem Willows and finally to take in the sights of Halloween in the Salem Common.

Currently the forecast for Saturday afternoon is light rain, but Sunday is looking clear. We will keep Sunday as the rain date, should Saturday be unpleasant.

If you like to fly kites, Nahant beach is also one of the best spots in the region for kite flying. We have been taking kite flying breaks the last few weeks which has been great fun too. Report from the Arnold Arboretum

The Arboretum is a great place to Trikke but advanced terrain, in that everything is varying degrees of hillclimbing. However, it is a very good place to practice hillclimbing because the riding paths are road widths, but cars are not allowed.

There were also a fair number of pedestrians that had to be minded, but with a handful of cyclists, skateboarders even a roller skier all taking advantage of the park it was obvious the culture was such that everyone seemed aware of each other and gracious. We received only positive reactions and of course stopped to answer questions and hand out cards.

A great place indeed to visit with your Trikke when in Boston.

Autumn at the Arnold Arboretum, A New England Trikke Experience

Thanks for your feedback regarding Foliage Trikke Tour options. The leaves of New Hampshire or Vermont were beckoning, but the weather forecast in the highlands for Saturday is unfavorable risky of the lingering rains from Thursday and Friday. The best weather on midday Saturday is looking like it will be localized in and around Boston and the Cape so we are turning our attention back to a Boston fall excursion, but instead of the Charles River Bikeway we are going to opt for a leisurely Trikke Tour of the Arnold Arboretum. Temps will be in the 60's and breezy, but the Arboretum should be more sheltered from the breezes than the river park.

This will be a leisurely ride very much with the intent of enjoying the fall beauty of the Arnold Arboretum. We should plan to meet after lunch about 1:00 pm in the Parking Lot outside the Main gate of the Arboretum (click here for directions). You can drive in or take the "T". This is also a good destination for your non-Trikking friends and family who may wish to join for walking or bike riding the park. Please email that you are coming so I will look for you.

On October 22nd we will be back on Nahant Beach at 1:30 pm and be plan your costume for the October 29th Trikke Haunting of Salem, Massachusetts also starting after lunch between 1 and 1:30. Trikke Foliage Tour Ride

I am looking for feedback from you New England Trikkers for a good location to take in a ride that is 1) Clear of fall trail debris 2) offers great New England Autumn views and is 3) Safe for a group ride.

We had tentatively set this Saturday for a ride in Boston along the Charles, but I am hearing reports that may not be such a good idea this time of year, so I am thinking of a change in venue for Saturday that takes us north to autumn colors.

RIDE UPDATE: Well the report from Richard, who is at his vacation spot near the Cape Cod Canal is that while the rain may be tapering off the roads remain damp and the forecast for the remainder of the day doesn't dry things out enough for safe conditions and a worthwhile trip to the Canal this day.

NEXT SATURDAY, October 8th the plan is to be back in Nahant.

October 15th We are thinking about the Charles River Bike Trail in Boston. If we do this getting as big a group together as possible would wow the down town.

October 22nd will be back in Nahant.

October 29th will be the Halloween rock and rolling through Salem, Massachusetts.

With the temps dropping we are going to back the start times to after lunch (around 1:30 pm) to capture the warmest part of the day and still be heading home by dusk.

August 20th's Canal Trail ride was so enjoyable we decided it was worth a second visit before the snow flies. Our starting meeting place is Herring Run Parking just off the Rt 6 scenic highway in Bourne which is on the northern bank of the canal. In order to avoid bridge traffic backup when coming from the North, take Rte 3 south, take exit 2, Herring Pond Rd, Drive to Rte 6, Park at Herring pond parking and look for other Trikkers in the parking lot. FYI Because we don't cross the canal bridges this is closer than you think to you Trikkers in Northern MA and Southern NH. Rhode Islanders, Connecticut Yankees and Cape cod and Islanders, come on over! We will start at 10 am instead of our usual 11 am.

This bikeway follows the Cape Cod Canal through sections of Bourne and Sagamore, respectively. Partially maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers, it offers fantastic views of the canal's various boat traffic, along with the area's quaint shoreline scenery of unique homes and natural beauty.

The path is actually the canal access road, a paved route designated for government vehicles, foot traffic and non-motorized vehicles only. It runs for approximately 7 - 8 miles between the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges. Update on the NRRT HPV Festival:

The good folks running the festival on Saturday will hold a 2 1/2 hour road ride prior to the afternoon festivities. The route is a 19 mile loop, which to do in 2 1/2 hours on a Trikke would be an intense workout. If you are thinking about coming Saturday please take a moment and open and review the details of that early ride by clicking here. You can also view the route here.

They will leave from Ayer at 9:30 and ride the NRRT to Groton (just over 3 miles) and switch over to the road ride going out to West Groton, then Shirley then back to the NRRT intersecting at Smith street, halfway between Groton and Ayer, then return to Ayer for lunch.

As a Trikker to do the road ride your skill set would need to include being able to:
1) sustain an average speed of 9 mph (6-8 uphill, 8-11 level, and 11+ downhill)
2) basic sustained hill climbing of brief hills ranging from 1 - 3 % rise (typical New England roadway hills)
3) With good control, drop into narrow carving to allow other overtaking vehicles to pass.
4) be able to deal with the spots of gravel on the route

My personal opinion is that as a group ride I am pretty hesitant to recommend that we Trikkers take to the road. Not all of us are ready for the hills, especially in West Groton and Trikking on the gravel spots will not be agreeable for any of us, especially if the gravel portions are an uphill pitch. Having not ridden the route myself I am not able to offer an assessment of the gravel challenge and would not risk it on a New England Trikkers group ride yet. If however you want to bring a regular bike as well and join the road riders in the morning that is an option to, just be sure to have your Trikke for the afternoon.

Therefore my recommendation for Trikke riders is to gather at the Ayer Parking lot about 9:15 am. We will depart with the bicyclists at 9:30, but we will stay on the NRRT and continue to Pepperell to a mid morning refreshment (Ice coffee at Dunks?) and return to Ayer by noon, hopefully reconnecting with the road riders at Smith and NRRT about 11:45 am.

Between 12 and 1 we will have lunch in Ayer and I will be setting up a Trikke display/demo area for people to try out the Trikkes. Having experienced Trikke riders there to help demonstrate like we did last year will be very helpful and I will be enormously grateful for the help. As for lunch I recommend we stop at Bruno's in Groton on the return ride, order and have them deliver to the Ayer parking lot at 12:15. North Shore Trikke will spring for the pizza for the Trikkers to say thanks for showing your stuff in Ayer that afternoon.

Between 1 and 1:30 the Festival has a Parade scheduled. I assume that will be a brief ride of all manner of non-traditional human powered vehicle through the down town of Ayer.

The trail is very level on the causeway and not very long and the curve of the causeway provides a panoramic view from one end of the trail to the other so wether you are ride fast or relaxed you are never very far from the other Trikkers.

If you like to fly kites, Nahant beach is also one of the best spots in the region for kite flying. We have been taking kite flying breaks the last few weeks which has been great fun too.

If you have family or friends who don't Trikke, this is a great location to walk, read, bring your dogs, or as said, fly a kite. See you there!

Halloween ride in Salem

We are planning a ride in costume the weekend before Halloween, which falls on a Monday this year. So far Saturday is the preferred day. Attached is a photo taken last halloween of the fearful Grikke Reaper, one of the Mario brothers and the Miss Pinky Butterfly. Start thinking about how you might dress up you and your Trikke this year!

When: Saturday August 27, 10:30 am to 1:00 pm

This Saturday has the specter of Hurricane Irene hanging over it "WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BE MOVING NORTHEAST UP OR JUST OFF THE EASTERN SEABOARD ON SATURDAY" according to the NOAA website. At this point it is a roll of the dice, though it seems the rains could hold off until afternoon or evening. To accommodate Irene, we will move the start time back to 10:30 am and may even push that earlier (check back to confirm times as we get closer to Saturday).

The meeting place will again be the Merrimack River trail head of the Old Eastern Marsh rail trail in Salisbury. This trail is about a 4 mile round trip and perfectly flat with great pavement and cuts right through coastal salt marsh. Great views of salt marsh landscape and of interest to bird watchers.

After riding the Salisbury Trail as time allows you can cross the Merrimac river bridge to Newburyport and ride the Clipper City Rail Trail down to Haley's Ice Cream and back. Great views of Newburyport and Haley's will be well earned!

Just over 8 easy miles total to ride.

Winter Tech Workshop: This winter, probably in January North Shore Trikke hopes to host Tech Workshop, where you can bring your Trikke and receive guided instruction for getting it in it's best shape for the 2012 Trikking season. We are still working out the details of the location, participation will be limited and there will be a registration fee, but if you are interest keep it on your radar screen.

Trikker's familiar with trail recommend having the wind direction be a factor on where to start. Carving Cape Cod and other rides...

Hi,

We have a handful of Trikkers who are interested in gathering on Cape Cod next Saturday, August 20 and we need to work out a place to meet to start the ride. Having spent little time on the Cape, I am looking for input from those of you who are more familiar with the Cape Cod bikeway system. Send me an email with your suggestions whether you can make it or not. Thanks for your help!

The following Saturday, August 27, we will be in Newburyport and Salisbury for the last official ride this year.

Labor Day weekend is a father daughter end of summer trip somewhere in New England so North Shore Trikke will not be hosting a ride over Labor Day weekend.

Saturday, September 10th we will back on Nahant and Lynn Beach.

Looking toward Halloween, last year a few of us donned some great costumes and haunted Nahant and Lynn on the afternoon of Halloween. Is there any interest out there with spookking Salem, MA on Saturday October 29 or Sunday October 30? We would do this around dusk and it would include riding the new bike trail that follows the new bypass. Send me a message with your preference of Saturday or Sunday.

ROAD TRIKKING - DO YOU DARE?!

Are you venturing out on to the New England roadways on your Trikke or sticking to local bike paths? The nearest paved bike paths for me are 20-25 minutes away so when I want to get a quick ride in the roads of my Town of Ipswich are the only option. For the most part I stick to back roads but some of the streets are still well traveled by automobiles which can be a problem for Trikkers and the car drivers who don't know what this crazy swerving cyclist is about to do. "Narrow Carving" therefore is a necessary skill in New England if you venture out on our narrow roadways.

Son on the subject of narrow carving, it is good etiquette to master the skill if you are riding any roads with modest car traffic. To maximize power in a narrow carve the technique that works best for me involves the following:

1) Bend the knees, drop your center of gravity and get up on the balls of the feet.

2) Use the "Pry bar" on the handlebars to control the lean. Try to keep the center point of the steering column in a fixed straight line of travel with no lateral motion at the center point. As the handlebars lean left of that center point the front wheel is to the right and then make an "hourglass" pattern in your travel space as handlebars roll right and the front wheel sweeps left. Back and forth holding that tight hourglass pattern in front.

3) If you do 1) and 2) in quick vigorous motions it becomes much easier to keep the back wheels carving in a path that is almost as narrow the wingspan of the Trikke.

I should also add that you drop into the narrow carve while already in motion. The technique described above is more about "guarding your momentum" as a vehicle passes you rather than building new momentum.

If you are a fitness nut there is the added benefit to your calf muscles: because you are holding heels up and staying on the balls of your feet your calves get a great little workout. This will define and strengthen your calf muscles more than anything else you might do on a Trikke. So whether you are trying to narrow carve or now make getting up on the balls of your feet is well worth it!

Try it out and see if that can work for you!

Saturday Rides with North Shore Trikke

SATURDAY TRIKKE RIDING NEWS:

Hi,

You may have noticed that I have not set a location for this Saturday's ride and here we are the day before. There is no need to bore you with the details but in recent weeks I have been overwhelmed with things happening at my regular job as well as at home that have drained my attentions and this last week they reached a fever pitch and I am exhausted and need to chill out to myself, so I will not be hosting a New England Trikker group ride tomorrow.

Additionally, next Saturday, August 13th an old friend of mine has at last found the love of her life and is getting married so I will not be able to host the usual North Shore Trikkers ride in Salisbury and Newburyport next Saturday. Next weekend my oldest daughter also heads back to her second year of college.

As always I continue to be available for appointments to demonstrate the Trikke Carving vehicles to possible new riders as well as riding lesson appointments for those of you new riders who wish to take advantage of the Trikke riding instruction available through North Shore Trikke.

So the next New England group ride will be Saturday August 20th and I am looking for feedback from you as to where you would like to meet to ride on August 20th. Trail options Include:

Windham Trail (Windham New Hampshire)
Nashua River Rail Trail, (Ayer, Groton, Pepperell Massachusetts or Nashua, New Hampshire)
Bruce Freeman Rail Trail (Chelmsford, Massachusetts)
Assabet Rail Trail (Hudson to Marlborough, Massachusetts)
Minuteman Rail Trail (Bedford, Lexington, Arlington, Massachusetts)
Cape Cod Rail Trail (I am North of Boston, but will get up early and drive to the Cape for a day if 3 or more other Trikkers pledge to meet me there!)

If you know of other good Trikking trails that you are using that would be of interest, email them my way.

I am going to send out Google Calendar invitations for the rides to come even though they are not yet updated with specific details for those rides. Please respond to the invitations with a yes if that is a Saturday can definitely meet up with other riders, no if you can't and maybe if you are going to try to make it. Your responses help me to plan. If you also are are on my Facebook friend's list I will continue to send out the Facebook Events as well, though those calendar announcements will be timed closer to the date of the ride.

August 27th we will meet in Salisbury for the last time until next summer.

The story behind President Carter's Trikke adoption….
We have been getting a lot of questions about this, so we wanted to share the story with you all.
Jack Carter, President and Mrs. Carter's eldest son, has been a Trikke enthusiast for at least four years. He thought that his mom and dad might also like carving, so he called Lisa and Lawrence Perkins of Atlanta Trikke / Team Mart and purchased two Trikke 8's for his parents as gifts. He asked Lisa if she would mind delivering them to the Carter Center and helping the Carters get started riding; she was thrilled to oblige! On a busy day at the Carter Center on January 20, 2010, Lisa and Lawrence met the Carters, introduced them to their new Trikkes, and got them started with the basics of carving.
In early March, President and Mrs. Carter invited the Perkins family to their home in Plains, Georgia to continue their Trikke training. Apparently, they had really taken to it well, and were already riding gracefully and powerfully. President Carter requested that Lawrence train him on hills, and Lisa helped Mrs. Carter fine-tune her riding skills on their tennis court. From what Lawrence tells us, the President really goes after it and attacks the hills. He will not be beaten by hills, wind, etc. He has a LOT of willpower and stamina!
Rosalynn Carter is quoted in The San Francisco Chronicle as regularly enjoying riding about 50 laps around their tennis court on a daily basis to stay in shape. In August, President Carter told Lisa that they ride their Trikkes two to three miles each day when they are at home in Plains.

Foiled by rain

The rain screwed everything up for today's Newburyport/Salisbury ride. Rich and I arrived at 1:30 in the middle of the rain and the radar looked as though it would last past 2 and then I was concerned about wet pavement. We arrived that early because I had someone interested in demo'ing a few Trikkes prior to our ride and the rain killed that. The radar seemed to indicate that the rain was localized to southern NH and Merrimac river area so we went south to Peabody where the radar was clear only to have a shower develop out of nowhere while we were there. Really couldn't win at loosing today.

Sunday Trikkers

Every Sunday from 2 till 5 through October. As long as it is not raining and the trail is dry, you can find local fans of North Shore Trikke out for a Sunday afternoon Trikke ride at one of various locations along the North Shore of Massachusetts. This is a great opportunity introduce Trikke riding to those unfamiliar with the activity. Just send Kenny Mayne a message to reserve a rental Trikke if you want to bring a friend!

Peabody Independence Greenway. We start at Lt Ross Park and ride to Middleton and back, a leisurely 4 mile loop. Sometimes we change it up and add the eastern segment of the trail doing a second loop to North Shore Mall and back

Newburyport and Salisbury Bike Trails. We meet at Cashman Park

Nahant Causeway and Lynn Beachfront. We are still figuring out the best meeting place, check back for specifics any day we ride here.

North Shore Trikke in cooperation with the Danvers Public School System will be donating 50% of the rental proceeds on all youth rentals (age 11 and under) to the American Heart Association.

Please note parent or guardian is required for equipment rentals age 17 and under.

PLEASE BE SURE TO BRING A SAFETY HELMET! For liability purposes we require helmets. Rentals and demos will not be issued to riders without helmets. If you are bringing your own Trikke a helmet is still required.

Skki comes to Ragged Mountain

Yesterday I had my first experience on the Trikke Skki at Ragged Mountain and here is my report:

Riding a Skki is not quite the same as a road Trikke. The lateral sliding is the first thing you have to contend with which leads right to figuring out how to use the ski edges as well as how the Skki responds to the angling of the front ski relative to back skis.

I was also surprised that it wasn't as much like downhill skiing as I expected. Rather there is crossover from all three of the common ski experiences: downhill, telemark, and cross country as well road Trikking, but only components of each. Trikke Skking offers truly a unique experience.

The Skki did meet my expectations in that it is truly a vehicle for New England conditions. Heretofore, the reports from out west is that the Skki's front ski can get bogged down in the powder common to the Rockies, but on the White Mountain hardpack it is grips the slopes like it was born here. Like the road Trikke it is incredibly nimble. For alpine skiers I would describe it as shape skis on steriods for I quickly figured out that I had to take care not to turn too abruptly as the Skki responds to the slightest turn of the handlebars. Conversely, once I figured out the edging and side slips the front ski provides a whole range of options from holding the same edge as the rear skis to sharply turning into the slip so that the front ski grabs the opposite edge.

The Trikke Skki truly opens a whole new dimension of what can be done with the 3CV technology as well as what can be done on a ski slope.
